I highly recommend this book! For anyone who's been wondering why it feels like no matter who's running things, we're still a slow-sinking ship, this book explains the American malaise! Highlighting the milestones that have delivered US to the frustrating present that is the “Untouchable Administrative State” of “a Billion Bureaucrats,” this book delivers the ingredients for the various components that make up the structure of “The Beast,” and is a revelation that illuminates the handiwork of intermediaries, with epiphanies for those of us who have been contemplating the deterioration of our country, that has extended for well over a century. This book explains it—and it makes sense! I found the book highly relatable, because I was presented with the explanations for why my own dealings with bureaucrats usually becomes an exercise in frustration.

I don't just recommend this book for the every day reader, this is a great book for educators and students—this would make great assigned reading for a wide variety of classes! It’s absolutely an excellent research tool, a handbook that is easy to reference, a book that you’ll want to read and reread, and it is a quick read, at a great price, well worth it!

While the matter is serious, there is humor that breaks up the mood and this book is truly non-partisan. Matthew P. Silberman does not pick a side, he presents a history of changes in US policies that, once considered beneficial and progressive, have now locked us into stagnation. “The Beast with a Billion Bureaucrats” explains where we are in the United States of America, because it’s necessary to see what has been inadvertently created, a far cry from our Founders (pro)visions! But as Mr. Silberman writes in his Preface, the book is “not a call to despair,” but rather it’s “a call to clarity,” and so it is.

Most interesting to me is the idea of what we’re presented with, “The Beast,” which is as close to a living organism as it gets, something we created, and in this analogy of the transformation of our political system, through the development of the REAL “fourth branch of government,” (not the media but the Administrative State), into a now subservient institution that may or may not be a lost cause, the reader walks away with a deeper understanding, a fortified foundation. Reading this book is not unlike putting on the glasses in the cult classic “They Live”! I dare you!
